Service Terminology and How Veldenhove Uses It
Published October 2026.
Purpose of this reference
The Veldenhove service uses a specific set of terms to describe how information is handled. These terms appear consistently across the system pages, the functions description, and the access process. This page explains what each term means in the context of the service, and how it differs from similar words that might be used more broadly or in other technical contexts.
This is a reference page for users who want to understand the service's language before submitting an enquiry or reviewing the system documentation.
Core terms
Information organisation
The process of taking incoming information and applying structure to it. Within Veldenhove, information organisation means assigning categories, sorting records by relevance, and arranging outputs in a form suitable for review. It is the central function of the service.
Classification layer
The component of the system responsible for assigning categories to incoming information. The classification layer applies a set of predefined rules to each item it receives. It operates before any result is shown to the user. The layer does not make judgements about the quality or accuracy of information; it assigns categories based on the characteristics defined in its rules.
Structured review
The process a user undertakes when inspecting classified outputs. Structured review differs from browsing raw data in that the material presented has already been sorted and labelled. Users navigate through organised categories rather than through an unfiltered list.
Enquiry
A request submitted by a user to the service, describing the information they wish to review. An enquiry may be general or specific. The service uses the details of an enquiry to determine which classification categories and filters to apply when preparing a result. An enquiry submitted through the contact form is directed to the support team for review.
Review-ready format
The form in which classified information is presented to a user. A review-ready format may be a grouped set of records, a hierarchical summary, a filtered list, or another arrangement suited to the nature of the classified material. The format is produced by the review preparation layer of the system.
Navigation interface
The part of the system that allows users to move through organised information. The navigation interface includes filters, category selectors, and labelling tools. It operates on the output of the classification and review preparation stages.
Access request
A specific type of enquiry in which a user asks to be given access to the Veldenhove service or to a particular category of organised information within it. Access requests are reviewed by the support team. Access is not automatically granted.
How terminology is applied consistently
Veldenhove uses these terms in a consistent way throughout its documentation. Where a term is used in a heading, description, or instruction, it carries the meaning defined here. If you encounter a term that is unclear in context, this page is the intended reference.
The service does not use synonyms interchangeably when precision matters. For example, an "enquiry" is distinct from an "access request", even though both involve contacting the support team. An enquiry is a general question about the service; an access request is a specific request to use the platform.
Changes to terminology
If the service introduces new terms, or if the meaning of an existing term changes as the platform develops, this reference page will be updated. The publication date at the top of the page reflects the most recent revision.
If a term used elsewhere on the site is not explained here, please contact the support team so that the gap can be addressed.
